Question: Can a therapist tell the police if you killed someone?

If a client tells their therapist they committed a crime in the past, whether it is murder, bank robbery, or kidnapping, we cant violate confidentiality unless there is a person at imminent risk, right now. Confidentiality in the therapy setting is the main reason why therapy works.

Can a therapist report you to the police?

Therapist Confidentiality and Crime Reporting They are legally required to tell the police or the potential victim if they believe a patient may hurt someone else. A psychologist is not required to report past crimes in most cases though.

Can a therapist tell the police if you did something illegal?

In the US we have laws around doctor patient confidentiality. This would mean you can tell your therapist anything and they wont report it to the police as long as you are not a threat to yourself or others. In the US you would have nothing to fear.
