No method is 100% accurate, but some are more reliable than others. The first way to find out your conception date is to determine when you were last ovulating. In general, women can only conceive when they are ovulating — that is, when their ovaries release a new egg into their fallopian tubes for fertilization.
Is LMP or conception date more accurate?
Because few women know the exact day they ovulated or conceived, an ultrasound done in the first trimester of pregnancy has been shown to the be the most accurate way to date a pregnancy. If an ultrasound date in the first trimester differs from your LMP date by seven days or more, we would go with the ultrasound.
Why do they add 2 weeks to pregnancy?
If your period is regular and lasts 28 days, and if ovulation generally happens on day 14 of your cycle, then conception probably took place about two weeks after the LMP. For gestational age counting, these two weeks are added to a pregnancy as a simpler method than trying to track from ovulation or fertilization.
