What is an au pair allowed to do?

Many governments impose limits as to how many hours an au pair is allowed to work. Tasks can include taking children to and from school, taking children to after-school activities, cooking, cleaning, ironing, tidying up and babysitting. Each placement varies depending on the host family.

How many days off do au pairs get?

The au pair is entitled to one and a half days off each week, which means that if her hours are spread over 6 days, one of those work days cannot exceed 5 hours of work. Au pairs get a full week-end off every month, from Friday night to Monday morning.

How do au pairs work?

An au pair lives with a host family, cares for their children and, in return, the hosts provide room, board and a weekly stipend. The term “au pair” is French for “on par” or “equal.” An au pair is supposed to be an equal part of the family, rather than someone you simply hire to help out.
